Make wireframes in Photoshop CS6

Apart from pencil and newspaper, there are many digital tools for creating wireframes—the "lo-fi" layout of a web folio that helps you to make up one's mind its basic construction before adding in visual pattern. One benefit of using Photoshop CS6 as your wireframing tool is that you may apply the wireframe equally a base for your detailed mockup, rather than having to offset from scratch.

Solution

The beneath epitome reveals the "napkin sketch" that my fictitious customer has provided me, which is one fashion of providing a wireframe.

After talking more than with my customer, I've gathered boosted requirements for the dwelling page:

  • The client wants a "learn more than" button later on the headline and intro text.
  • He will have no more than 2 quotes in the "what people are saying" area.
  • The customer likes the thought of having a groundwork colour or epitome with a boxed content surface area that is white.

Time to fire up Photoshop and create a wireframe that takes actual dimensions into business relationship and provides a slightly more polished wait.

Start past creating a document based on the 960 grid system (which you lot can learn about in the section chosen "Setting upwardly a Grid in Photoshop" found in the complimentary sample chapters) that is 1,100 pixels wide by 750 pixels loftier. If you desire, use the Pigment Bucket Tool (G) and fill the background with a light gray colour to represent that there will exist a background colour or paradigm.

Choose the Rectangle Tool (U) and describe a box to represent the content area. Since I'yard using the 960 grid arrangement, my box is 940-pixels broad. I've made the foreground color white so that it shows up confronting the gray background.

To brand the process faster, blazon D to set the foreground to black and the background to white. We'll draw blackness boxes to stand for the content areas, then change the opacity to make them appear greyness, every bit shown hither:

Adding rectangles to represent logo and navigation

Adding rectangles to represent logo and navigation

Following the grid, add a rectangle to represent the logo. Lower the opacity of the rectangle past immediately typing in an opacity value ("thirty") after you depict the rectangle. If you wish, add together text using the Type Tool (T) to add together the text "LOGO" over the box. Add another rectangle to represent the navigation area, and again, lower the opacity value to brand it grey.

Y'all may want to add rectangles to help indicate the content column areas. The next prototype shows I've decided on a ii-cavalcade layout with a slightly larger main content cavalcade and a smaller column for the home page paradigm. I set the opacity to 10% for the columns, and also added another rectangle to represent the footer at the bottom of the page.

Determining column sizes

Draw rectangles to represent the content areas within the columns. You may also wish to add together dummy text using Photoshop'due south Type > Paste Lorem Ipsum command. My completed wireframe tin can be seen hither:

Making a rough wireframe like this gives the client a sense of where content goes on the folio, but allows for quick and easy editing if you need to move items around.
