Surrounded by his loving family, James Ky Thompson, aged 79, of Warrior (Smoke Rise) passed away on September 27, 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents James Clyde Thompson and Doris Low, and his brother, Steven Wayne Thompson. Ky is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Enid Thompson; sons Kirk (Lisa) Thompson and Allen (Melanie) Thompson; daughter, Pamela (Matthew) Kervin; sister, Eva Fay (Conrad) Richardson; brother, Mark Thompson; sister-in-law, Mary Thompson; grand-children Luca and Nicola Thompson; Alexandra (Nick) Halfacre and Abbigale Thompson; Alexander, Elizabeth and Daniel Kervin; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in Birmingham and raised in Powderly, Ky was a graduate of Jones Valley High School where he met Enid Thompson, ne Brake, a classmate of his younger brother Steve. After a short time as a draftsman with Southern Natural Gas, Ky joined the Air Force in 1964 and thus began his nearly 38-year-long career serving his country and state, rising to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant with the 117th Intelligence Squadron based in Birmingham. As a valued member of the Alabama Air National Guard, Ky assisted with recovery efforts after Hurricane Frederic, served in the U.A.E. as part of Operation Desert Shield, provided support for the state's Counter-drug Program and helped usher in the squadron's conversion to the 117th Air Refueling Wing. Ky was a family man; he loved the Lord and was a member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church. Gregarious and fun-loving, he never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand. He could fix anything and loved to tinker in his workshop. A keen card and dominoes player and creative yard-croquet wizard, he made the most of spending time with his loved ones at large family gatherings. Ky loved traveling - he visited all 50 states; made trips to see Enid's family in England; and enjoyed sea cruises, the Smoky Mountains and Anna Maria Island. Buddy Holly and Elvis were his favorites. A proud and fun-loving grandparent, 'Pop' loved to spend time with his grandchildren, grandnieces and nephews. Ky was deeply loved and will be terribly missed. A visitation will be held at the Blountsville Historical Park, Hwy 231, on Sunday, October 3rd from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. (Covid precautions required.) In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Smoke Rise Baptist Church Building Fund or to the Blountsville Historical Park Society. There will be no additional services. |

Lewis Clinton Ray Class of 1951 |
2020. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Bettie Shealy, children Lewis C. Shealy III and Deborah Hayden, and grandchildren Meghan Samberg, Lewis C. Shealy IV, Randall Hayden, Timothy Hayden, and Matthew Hayden, and great grandchildren Pepper Samberg, Olive Samberg, Idris Samberg, Alaina Shealy, and Isabella Harden. Lew, as most people knew him, was born May 7, 1931 on a farm in Conehatta, MS, to Lewis Clinton Shealy and Bessie Horton Shealy. There he lived a life of simple means with siblings Richard Allen Shealy Sr., Lavon Shealy, and Carolyn Shealy Jolly until 1940, when the family moved to Lipscomb, AL, where his father went to work at the new US Steel. He left school and joined the military at the age of 17, but before he left, he proposed to his highschool sweetheart Bettie. He briefly returned a year later and they married in May 1952. Lew had a successful career, beginning in the United States military. He served for more than 20 years in the United States Air Force as an OSI agent, serving tours in Korea and Vietnam. He was also a Chief Liaison to the CIA and FBI, and one of the very few people to receive the award of gold cufflinks with the fingerprints of his left and right index fingers from J. Edgar Hoover for his exceptional service to the bureau. He then used that experience to move onto corporate loss prevention, with executive roles at Woodward and Lothropin Washington, DC, Marshall Fields in Chidago and the Eckerd Drug Corporation in Tampa, FL. His innovative techniques (like installing a camera inside the head of a mannequin) earned him much acclaim and led to appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show and 20/20 with John Stossel. Lew retired in 1996, moving back to his adopted home, State of Alabama. During his retirement, Lew enjoyed the simple routines after a lifetime of hard work. He loved a good glass of wine, waking up early to make sure to feed the many animals who would wander into his yard, and attending Sunday School at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He could often be found at his beloved Bright Star restaurant holding court. He loved keeping up with his family, always with his phone or ipad close by to forward them articles he found interesting. He was extremely proud of his five grandchildren, and was their biggest fan in whatever they pursued. Lew was blessed with charm and a sense of humor that had a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. He never met a stranger and always had a joke and a story at hand. To many, Lew was a fountain of wisdom, having certain phrases that acted his north star. Does it pass inspection? Anyone who worked with Lew would hear that one many times. "Listen to those who are 20 years older than you until you are about 50, and then listen to those who are 20 years younger than you from then on. " He heard that from his uncle when he was young, and it served to guide Lew through life. |

Joe Johnston Class of 54 |
Christy Bricker Gutierrez is with Joe Johnston and 2 others. Today at 4:32pm, my sweet loving most wonderful grandpa Joe Johnston passed away. My Mom Sharon and grandma Margie were there at his side. I was there via FaceTime. We told him how much we loved him & how great he was. We watched him take his last breathes. Today was a hard day. As I got off of FaceTime with my mom, my mousepad that I work at everyday, was starring me in the face. This is how I will always remember my papaw, this is how I will always remember my Grandma & Grandpa Johnston. This pic was was my high school graduation, I made him this mousepad way back then and he still had it. I took it with me when we moved them from TN to FL two years ago. Ive been using it ever since. Who knew such a small tiny gift wouldve meant so much later down the road. Grandpa and I always loved pictures. I cant believe hes gone. I love you so much, WE all love you so so much, and will miss you dearly. I know youre in a better place now with all our loved ones. Take care of my baby up there papaw. Im so glad youll be with her now. |

She once traveled around the world in 90ish days and her house was filled with souvenirs from her trip which my cousins and I used to "discover" in her attic like they were buried treasure. She wore pink almost every day, except for the 4th of July, which was also her birthday. In sum, she lived a full life and is a good lesson that you're never too old to keep learning, keep exploring, and keep doing. She leaves behind 2 children, 11 grandchildren, 30ish great-grandchildren, and an ever-increasing number of great-great grandchildren, the youngest of which was just born today!
